Especially in the north of Spain, one can go to eat at a siderhouse.  It is a type of restaurante called like this because that normally in it, is accompanied the food with cider.  The customers, serve themselves directly the cider from the barrel.  And one must do it in a very special way, that they called “pouring”.  It consists in doing it with the glass away from the tap in a way that it hits the cider with the glass oxegenating it and tasting better.

We are going to order the ciderhouse menu that includes:

Tortilla, fried cod fish, pork chots or fish

And for desert cheese with nuts and quince jelly

One of the typical things in the ciderhoues is the chorizo with cider.  Cooked with cider and served in small pieces, it is a starter very appetizing.  Also the cod torilla is very good.  The cod is fish and can be cooked in many forms, for example accompanied with peppers.

One of the principal plates is the grilled meat.  It is normal to have a small grill in the middle of the table, from where each person goes to take the meat before and after, depending of if the preference is for more or less done.

The part with the cheese, can eat with the hands. This is not considered bad education (bad mannered), at least in informal contexts, like for example if we are eating with friends.

Well, the typical dessert here in teh cider house are the nuts and the quince jelly with cheese, so the procedure, the procedure for taking for oneself the dessert, would be to crack the nut and we take a little piece of nut and a little piece of cheese with quince jelly and … really good!

At the end of the meal, we usually take a coffe and maybe a liquer

Pamplona is a Spanish city situated in the Community Foral de Navarra, in the northern of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a population of some one hundred ninety eight thousand (198,000) inhabitants and receives as much national as international tourism.

A visit to the historical center is sufficient to realize that it has an interesting heritage and monuments. ……………………………………………….

The parties most celebrated in Pamplona and known internationally are the Sanfermines, celebrated each year between the seventh (7) and the fourteenth (14) of July.  And because of this for the tourists it is especially interesting the (so) called “Route of the confinement” (the running of the bulls).

This is the route that they do running in front of the bulls each day between the 7th and 14th of July and is eight hundred forty nine (849) meters.  It begins at eight in the morning and lasts between some two or three minutes, when they arrive  at the plaza of the bulls.

There exist some “countdowns” that mark, from the moment in which the Sanfermines finish, how much remains for (until) the next (one).

Pamplona is furthermore the first city that the pilgrims pass through that do the Camino de Santiago via the Ruta de Roncesvalles. In the historical center are many the references to the Camino (the road) and it is easy to find pilgrims, happy to loose themselves in its streets.

When finally we find a ticket machine free (available), we follow the directions of the screen.  Origin: Madrid, Destination: Toledo.  We love to travel next to the window, so we choose also our seat. Perfect! So together with (next to) the window, the countryside looks of luxury.

Toledo is a city declared Heritage by the UNESCO in one-thousand nine-hundred eighty-six (1986)

It breaths tradition, to us seems very special.

Well, we are going to visit the Cathedral and after we are going to see if we can find some of the thing most typical from Toledo like craftsmanship, knives, armor.

In various points of the city, on finds signs of “the route of Don Quijote”.  They are places where Don Quijote passed, the literary knight of the novel of Cervantes.

Toledo, is also called “the city of the three cultural” because here coexisted Christians … Christians, Muslims, and Jews, so that we find a big variety of temples that initially belonged to  one of the cultures but after transformed and served for the worship of the others ………………………………………………

Metro Stop: “SUN”

Plaza “Gate of the Sun”, in the center of Madrid.  It is afternoon in Madrid, the capital of Spain and the city seems more alive than never (ever).  Our first stop is in the famous statue of the Bear and the Madroño (tree).  This statue, made in stone and bronze, measuring some four (4) meters high and representing the realistic form of the figures of the Coat (Shield) of Madrid

On the 0ther side of the plaza one finds the famous building of the Post Office on the top of whose tower stands (out) the clock

You listen to the bells, you eat the grapes and after twelve (12) grapes you do chin chinnn … cheers … because it is the New Year

And here in the Puerta del Sol many Spaniards and also foreigners meet to take (eat) the grapes watching the clock that we have behind (us) and that … we are going to see now a little closer

Locals of Madrid and tourists come and go crossing this big plaza.  It is a classic for the tourists to put ones feet just on the point marked as zero kilometer, the place that indicates the point of departure of the Spanish radial highways

On the way there, we pass together to the National Prado Museum.  Together with the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofía Museum, the National Prado Museum forms the Art Triangle, a target for art lovers from all of the world.  The statue of Velázques presides (over) the principal facade, and both the exterior of the museum like the surrounding (area), they seem to us fantastic.

Madrid is the capital of Spain and the biggest and most populated city of the country with some three million two-hundred thousand (3,200,000) inhabitants.

It is a city modern and cosmopolitan and we are sure that it is not going to leave us indifferent.

H: This is the “Royal Palace”

The “Royal Palace” of Madrid, is the official residence of the King of Spain but in reality it is used only in ceremonies of State.

The current building works (construction) was done between one-thousand seven-hundred and thirty-eight and one-thousand seven-hundred fifty-five (1738-1755).

This temple is a gift that Egypt made to Spain in one-thousand nine-hundred sixty-eight (1968).

In the summer season, there are various the concerts and shows that they organize in the area.

Welcome to Alcalá de Henares, a city a few kilometers from Madrid and the place where was born Cervantes, the writor of Don Quijote from La mancha.

I arrived last night and now we are going to explore this day.

The city is not very big but there are many places which to visit

In this zone of Spain, it is very common the tradition of the “tapas”, small rations of food that the bars give free with the order your drink.  We ordered also a ration of “spicy potatoes”

We continue walking to arrive at one of the zones most loved: La Calle Mayor (the main street).

It is the longest porticoed (porch with roof) street  of Europe and the commercial center of the city.  Originally it was the axis of the Jewish neighborood during the twelfth Century (CXII) and the buildings, en their mostly two stories, had the living quarters in the higher part and the stores in the first floor.

We decide: salad with lettuce, tuna, corn, cheese and tomato, and for second … a tradicional sándwich ham y queso, yes?

M: San Juan is the longest day of the year and would be the shortest night of the year … one celebrates the summer solstice, but is linked to various traditions … and normally what is done in many Spanish cities is to make bonfires and the people gather around the bonfire …

H: It is a big fire, no?

M: It is a big fire … and you need to have a paper with your “bad things” from the past year you write and throw to the fire to burn it, for renewing yourself to have a new year much much happier …

H: I like this … It’s that we don’t have in the United States.  Then we are going to go with this paper and throw it in the fire, no?

In many places, as is the case in Spain, the celebration of the summer solstice has be associated with the night of the 24th of June, night of San Juan.  In every place of Spain, people celebrate in a particular way and with their own traditions, but if something is always present it is the fire.  They can’t leave out the famous bonfires, and numerous rituals that allow them to leave behind the bad and give way to the good.  Often they jump and dance around teh fire for purification and insure the rebirth of the sun.  One of the traditions most popular, is that of writing the problems in a paper and throwing it to the fire so that they disappear.

Of whatever form, San Juan is always a special and magical night, which the spanish celebrate in company and with good mood year after year …

H: It is a little like New Years, but in the middle of the year …

In Spain, the people throw out the trash in so-called “containers” and is each time (increasingly) common the habit of recycling.  Practically in each street, you can find a group of containers of different colors.  These colors, indicate what type of trash (one) should throw inside.

(There) exist a special container for the GLASS, a green container for the organic trash, one yellow for packaging and plastic and one blue for paper and cardboard.

At whatever hour of the day, the people throw in them their trash and a dump truck handles passing for downloading the containers, normally, at night.

(It) is curious that something so routine in Spain, results in such surprise for those who are not Spanish.

To go up via the funicular (cable car) to Artxanda, 1.80 (one eighty)

With the funicular – a type of train that climbs the mountain – one can arrive in very little time to Artxanda.  This is one of the mountains that delimits the city of Bilbao and from which, some 300 (three hundred) meters high, the panoramic view of the city is “unbetterable” (unbeatable).

It is a view that permits furthermore (also allows) enjoyment of the green spaces, to practice a little of sport in the open air or sample the gastronomy in one of the bares and restaurants situated on the top.

So in some ten minutes and for one euro eighty, we find ourselves in an alternative corner of Bilbao, seeing the city from another angle.
