You English speakers may remember Gloria Estefan for “The Rhythm is Gonna Getcha” or “Coming out of the Dark”, but this Cuban-born singer also has had several hits in Spanish. One of our favorite Spanish songs from her is “Hoy” which translates in English as “Today”. An added bonus is that the video for this song is filmed in beautiful Machu Picchu, Peru. The lyrics are quite poetic and make for a more difficult literal translation, but see if you can’t understand and feel the romance and poetry behind the Spanish words.
Follow along with the lyrics in the Spanish version below, then check the literal English translation for any vocabulary you didn’t understand.
After you’ve checked the literal translation you can check out her English version of the song. However, as is often the case, the English version is quite different from the original literal translation but follows a similar sentiment. This version of the song is titled “Wrapped”. We’ve included it for comparison following the translation below.
“HOY”
Tengo marcado en el pecho
todos los días que el tiempo
no me dejó estar aquí
Tengo una fe que madura
que va conmigo y me cura
desde que te conocí
Tengo una huella perdida
entre tu sombra y la mía
que no me deja mentir
Soy una moneda en la fuente
tú mi deseo pendiente
mis ganas de revivir
Tengo una mañana constante
y una acuarela esperando
verte pintado de azul
Tengo tu amor y tu suerte
y un caminito empinado
Tengo el mar del otro lado
Tú eres mi norte y mi sur
Hoy voy a verte de nuevo
Voy a envolverme en tu ropa
Susúrrame en tu silencio
cuando me veas llegar
Hoy voy a verte de nuevo
Voy a alegrar tu tristeza
Vamos a hacer una fiesta
pa´que este amor crezca más
Tengo una frase colgada
entre mi boca y mi almohada
que me desnuda ante ti
Tengo una playa y un pueblo
que me acompañan de noche
cuando no estas junto a mí
Tengo una mañana constante
y una acuarela esperando
verte pintado de azul
Tengo tu amor y tu suerte
y un caminito empinado
Tengo el mar del otro lado
Tú eres mi norte y mi sur
Hoy voy a verte de nuevo
Voy a envolverme en tu ropa
Susúrrame en tu silencio
cuando me veas llegar
Hoy voy a verte de nuevo
Voy a alegrar tu tristeza
Vamos a hacer una fiesta
pa´que este amor crezca más
I have marked on the chest
all the days of that time
hasn’t let me be here
I have a faith that ripens
that goes with me and cures me
since I met you
I have a lost trace
between your shadow and mine
that won’t let me lie
I am a coin in the fountain
you my pending desire
my will to live again
I have a constant morning
and a waiting watercolor
to see you painted of blue
I have your love and your luck
and a steep trail
I have the ocean on the other side
You are my north and my south
Today I am going to see you again
I am going to wrap myself in your clothes
Whisper to me in your silence
when you see me arrive
Today I am going to see you again
I am going to brighten your sadness
We are going to have a party
so that this love grows more
I have a hung phrase
between my mouth and my pillow
that makes me naked infront of you
I have a beach and a town
that accompanies me from the night
when you are not together with me
I have a constant morning
and a waiting watercolor
to see you painted of blue
I have your love and your luck
and a steep trail
I have the ocean on the other side
You are my north and my south
Today I am going to see you again
I am going to wrap myself in your clothes
Whisper to me in your silence
when you see me arrive
Today I am going to see you again
I am going to brighten your sadness
We are going to have a party
so that this love grows more
